In 2011, LKMco published Laura McInerney’s short book ‘6 predictable failures of free schools...and how to avoid them’. The book built on research by Seymour Sarason, the American academic who studied US Charter Schools, and discussed how the issues he identified would affect the free school programme. Reading her book now, it’s clear to see how prescient Laura was in her predictions, and how useful her recommendations were, and remain, to groups going through the free school process.
Despite these potential hazards, free schools have flourished. Now an established part of the education landscape, NSN asked Laura, Loic Menzies (Director, LKMco), and free school leaders to reflect on the predicted failures.
Mark Lehain, Interim Director of NSN, said: “When Laura and Loic published the ‘6 predictable failures’, I was working through the pre-opening process as co-founder of Bedford Free School. I said to Laura that one day, we’d follow up with a report on the unpredictable successes of free schools and I’m delighted we’ve been able to do this now.
“The honest reflections we’ve had from free school leaders give fantastic insight into the challenges groups face when opening a new school, and I hope these will be valuable to those currently applying to open a free school and those in pre-opening.”
